Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of Scyfer, a University of Amsterdam-affiliated company focusing on machine learning research, and outlined its vision for artificial intelligence in the process.
Matt Grob, executive vice president, technology, Qualcomm Incorporated, said: “We started fundamental research a decade ago, and our current products now support many AI use cases from computer vision and natural language processing to malware detection on a variety of devices — such as smartphones and cars — and we are researching broader topics, such as AI for wireless connectivity, power management and photography.”
Qualcomm Technologies is directing its efforts towards implementation of AI on end devices in contrast to executing AI workloads in the cloud, a practise followed by many companies. This is to ensure that processing can be done with or without a network or Wi-Fi connection, leading to benefits such as immediate response, enhanced reliability, increased privacy protection, and improved network efficiency.
Qualcomm Technologies has made continuous advancements in AI research introducing cutting-edge machine learning technologies. Some examples include advances in neural network techniques, network optimisation, and specialised hardware architectures designed to accelerate machine learning workloads.
Max Welling, founder and professor of the University of Amsterdam, will join Qualcomm to further its AI research and development as part of the Scyfer deal.
