UNICEF has announced it has joined Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with data technologists at the organisation’s Office of Innovation aiming to create collaborations to innovatively solve humanitarian challenges for social good and to benefit children.

Chris Fabian, senior advisor of ventures at UNICEF Innovation believes UNICEF to be in a position to cater to the needs of vulnerable children and to bring about positive changes in their lives through usage of advanced technologies by processing vast amounts of data accessible to it. He believes that advancements in AI will help address globally relevant issues such as spread of diseases, responses to climate changes and disasters, and uncertainties in employment. He said: “This allows UNICEF to work towards algorithmic equity in the use of data and training of machine intelligence on a global scale.”

The Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society (Partnership on AI) is a not-for-profit organisation, founded by Amazon, Apple, Google/DeepMind, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft. According to its website, the partnership was established “to study and formulate best practices on AI technologies, to advance the public’s understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society.”

The consortium of companies is aiming to bring together forces from varied for-profit and non-profit sectors that are committed to exploring opportunities and rising challenges in AI. It will arrange for the initial funding and later receive assistance from new members coming from academics, user group advocates, and industry domain experts, as the membership opens to others.
